Arizona's version of the Tony awards took place at the Tempe Center for the Arts on Monday, September 17th. Forty theatres participated around the valley including youth, contracted, and non-contracted theatres. Hale Theatre, who falls under non-contracted, swept seven awards, receiving the most earned in their category.
The ariZoni Theatre Awards is a not-for-profit organization devoted to promoting the visibility and growth of theatre in the Valley of the Sun & Maricopa County. Most importantly, after completion of an exhaustive judging process, (involving close to 100 Adjudicators) awards of excellence are presented to those individuals who have excelled in performance and production during the just-completed season.
Hale's hit straight play of the season, "To Kill a Mocking Bird", earned three awards by itself. D. Scott Withers, who won best director for "To Kill a Mocking Bird" is now cast in the first Broadway national tour of "Catch Me If You Can". Mocking Bird's lead actor, Rob Stuart received best actor in a major role for Atticus Finch, as well as best supporting actor in "Little Shop of Horrors". Charlotte Strayhorne won best supporting actress, earning "To Kill a Mocking Bird" a whopping three awards total.
Hale Theatre wasn't just represented in straight plays, but in musicals as well, showcasing their ability to put on quality productions no matter the genre. Cambrian James took on the feat of directing and choreographing the musical comedy, "Crazy For You". His hard work and love of the craft was rightly noted as he took home best director and choreographer. The awards for "Crazy For You" didn't just end with Cambrian, it also earned the highest ariZoni title of best overall production.
Owner David Dietlein says, "We always work hard to provide quality family Broadway entertainment to the valley. It's great when you are recognized for all your hard work. Everyone at our theatre plays a valuable role. None of what we do is possible without everyone's hard work and dedication to the arts."
