City seeking host duties for 2009 & 2013

(MESA, Ariz.) - City of Mesa officials have announced that Mesa was selected as a finalist to host the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division II Baseball Tournament in 2009 and 2013. Mesa was selected as a finalist city along with traditional baseball hotbeds. A decision is expected this week on which city will be awarded the tournament. The Mesa Convention & Visitors Bureau, City of Mesa, Grand Canyon University and the Phoenix Regional Sports Commission were instrumental in securing Mesa as a finalist city.

The NCAA Division II Baseball Championship is a well attended event put on by the NCAA with attendance capable of reaching thousands of fans for the championship finals. The tournaments will be held May 23 – 30, 2009 and May 29 – June 4, 2011. Hosting the tournament would bring eight teams to Mesa, nearly 250 student athletes and the potential of more than 1,000 out-of-state visitors. The actual tournament will be played at Hohokam Stadium with the teams staying solely in Mesa hotels. An estimated 1,300 room nights will be generated by hosting the tournament resulting in an estimated economic impact of $750,000.

More than 240 NCAA Division II institutions will be vying for the opportunity to win a national championship. The schools will filter into the national finals by winning one of eight regional tournaments. The final eight teams will play a double-elimination tournament.
