Mesa tourism officials announced that they will serve as the host city for Tough Mudder Arizona - The Toughest Event on the Planet, held Jan. 14 and 15, 2012. The event was relocated from the West Valley and will take place at the DMB Mesa Proving Grounds. The Mesa Convention & Visitors Bureau (Mesa CVB) worked with event organizers to secure a location that meets the event's unique requirements which include a minimum of 500 acres of open outdoor space. Event organizers will build an intense 12.5 mile course of extreme event challenges on the Mesa Proving Grounds site. The Mesa CVB identified the region as a logical choice for hosting the event and worked alongside DMB Associates to secure access to their site.

"This is a good start for getting mega-events exposure to the East Valley," said Sports & Tourism Development Manager Josh Todd. "Mesa excels in hosting a variety of sports and tournaments throughout the year but this will be our first foray into extreme endurance events. This is a growing industry and Tough Mudder attracts a global audience."

Mesa CVB is partnering with Tough Mudder, a Brooklyn-based company that hosts extreme events across the world including Canada, United Kingdom, Japan and Australia. Mesa's event will kick off the 2012 season. Tough Mudder events are hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test your all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie.

Currently, the Tough Mudder Arizona event will be held over two days with 10,000 participants and an estimated 10,000 spectators. Entry forms for the Arizona event are still available online but at press time the event was nearly sold out. Spectators are encouraged and tickets cost $20.
