Close ~ Convenient ~ Smart
Mesa has fast become the third largest metropolitan city in the state of Arizona offering a variety of lifestyle and leisure pursuits that are in high demand by visitors and residents alike. Now boasting 460,000 residents, Mesa’s population is greater than such well-known cities as Minneapolis, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, and Miami. Mesa is unique among cities in the Phoenix area as it is embraced by the Sonoran Desert – a playground for incredible, sought-after outdoor recreation and one-of-a-kind attractions. Pair this with fabulous weather, exquisite dining and ample shopping opportunities and you have the makings for incredible discoveries in the American Southwest.

Widespread Cycling Community Support for November 7 Ride of Honor
This Saturday, Nov. 7, cyclists of all types, ability and age will gather in Mesa for the 2009 Ride of Honor.  The 11 mile non-competitive ride planned by the Not One More Foundation and City of Mesa Transportation Department serves to honor those killed and seriously injured riding Arizona roads while raising awareness for the need of motorists and cyclists to safely share the road.

Local cycling shops, clubs and teams are planning to participate, demonstrating widespread support for the event and mission.  DNA Cycles, Focus Cyclery, Global Bikes, Mike’s Bike Chalet, Paragon Cycling, TRIBE Multisport and 2 Wheel Jones Bicycles are participating in the safety fair showcasing products, tools and safety practices, which all cyclists should use to be more visible on the road.

The first 500 participants at the Ride of Honor will receive a highly visible technical t-shirt courtesy of Mortenson Construction. Ron Vokoun, Construction Executive with Mortenson, has a compelling personal interest cycling safety.  “Having been a first-hand witness to a vehicle-bike accident awakened me,” Vokoun said. “Participating in the Ride of Honor allows us to contribute to our community and supports the employee cycling team while promoting safety.”

The Ride of Honor is free and open to cyclists of all abilities from casual riders to professionals. Cyclists will model safe riding by wearing helmets, obeying traffic laws and maintaining a safe speed within specified bike routes and lanes. Registration will be at Gene Autry Park in Mesa at 9 a.m. and the ride will begin shortly after 10 a.m. making a loop using McKellips, Recker, Adobe and Lindsay Roads. A helmet and a signed waiver are required to participate.

Details on the event are available at http://www.notonemorecyclist.com, http://azbrumbys.com, http://www.mesaaz.gov/transportation and at local cycling shops.
