A broad consortium of Valley cultural, educational and community organizations, combined with numerous artists, engineers and creatives, have joined forces to develop a new event, Southwest Maker Fest. The inaugural festival will be held in downtown Mesa.
The event will feature exhibits, workshops and demonstrations by inventors, artists and makers of every kind.
The "maker" movement is booming in the U.S., with large national events held annually in New York, the Bay Area, and numerous other major metropolitan areas. Southwest Maker Fest seeks to develop, over time, a large, successful and regional event that will celebrate makers, innovation and creativity, and build upon the booming Do-It-Yourself movement in our nation. This initial pilot event is designed to engage participants and visitors, test content and build a coalition of interested supporters. There is tremendous energy and excitement among the partners about building an inclusive and highly creative event that will grow to have a major regional presence and build on our State's strength as a fertile location for new ideas and entrepreneurial spirit.
This southwestern festival is being driven by almost 40 experienced event administrators, makers, event planners, marketing directors and partners from such major institutions at ASU (Tempe and Polytechnic campuses), Mesa Arts Center, i.d.e.a. Museum, Maricopa Community Colleges, Mesa Public Library, Downtown Mesa Association and Arizona Science Center, to name just a few, and grassroots organizations such as HeatSync Labs and The Collaboratory, among many others. The event is being held under the auspices of Ultimate Imagination Inc., the 501(c)3 non-profit arm of the Downtown Mesa Association. The Southwest Maker Fest is a signature event of the Arizona SciTech Festival.
Southwest Maker Fest is being staged concurrent with spark! Mesa's Festival of Creativity.
