Nearly 300 elite synchronized swimmers will gather at the Kino Aquatic Center, April 11-14 for the 2012 U.S. Junior Synchronized Swimming Championships. The event will feature athletes ages 15-18, who will vie for Junior National Titles in the solo, duet, team and combination events. The competition marks the first USA Synchro National Championship held in Mesa and will be hosted by Mesa Sports and the Arizona Synchronized Swim Association.
The announcement comes as the city is about to unveil another key investment into Mesa's swimming facilities in the coming year when Skyline Aquatic Center opens. Mesa Public Schools and Mesa Aquatics along with the combined efforts of the City of Mesa and Mesa Sports & Tourism Development played an instrumental role in securing the USA Synchro National Championship in Mesa.
"We are thrilled to be expanding on Mesa's reputation as a premier destination for swim competitions," said Robert Brinton, president & CEO of the Mesa Convention & Visitors Bureau. "This is yet another great partnership that displays a variety of organizations working together to attract outstanding events and bring national attention in Mesa."
The nationally-sanctioned competition will feature the team and duet events, which are also Olympic disciplines. The team event consists of eight athletes while the duet consists of two synchronized swimmers. The competition will also include the solo and the combination routine event. The solo requires a swimmer to synchronize a routine to music, while the free combination routine is considered a fan-favorite and incorporates a variety of different routines into one four and a half minute program.
Top routines will advance to the 2012 U.S. National Championships which will take place April 26-28, 2012 in Orlando, Fla.
