Valley Metro Light Rail Expansion to Connect Downtown Mesa
The new 3.1 mile stretch of Valley Metro Light Rail service is now open in Mesa! The expansion connects more of Mesa's top kid attractions for young visitors to experience the local Mesa flair. If you've got a little one who's eager to ride the rails, here's a day on the trail perfect for kids.
9:30 a.m.: Ditch your car at the Sycamore/Main Street Park ‘n Ride lot and hop on an east-bound light rail train. Trains arrive every 12 minutes to keeps your day moving along and the kids excited to ride the train.
10 a.m.: Kickoff the morning at the i.d.e.a Museum, a fun, inspiring, and educational hands-on museum for children and families. Kids of all ages can explore multi-sensory experience exhibits that help children engage with art, science, engineering and design.
Noon: Head over to Sweet Cakes Café for lunch. Their soups, salads and sandwiches feature classic family recipes that are kid-approved. Be sure to save room for dessert, as they were featured on TLC’s Best Food Ever for their pastries and desserts.
1 p.m.: Downtown Mesa features 39 sculptures on both sides of Main Street, perfect for a scavenger hunt with kids. Use the city’s self-guided tour guide and let the kids pick out which art pieces they want to scout out. We recommend checking out the Polar Bear & Cubs sculpture by artist Dollores Shelledy, and The Big Pink Chair by Mary Consie, a local Mesa artist. The walking tour guide can be printed out here: http://www.downtownmesa.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Sculpture-Guide-legal1.pdf.
2:30 p.m.: Stop by Gotham City Comics before hopping back on the train. This comic store not only features the must-read stories of Batman, Superman and the Hulk, but also displays an impressive collection of memorabilia and superhero sculptures and figurines.
3 p.m.: Walk half a block east to the Center St. Station and catch the westbound train back to the Sycamore/Main Street Park ‘n Ride lot.
