Description/Duties
This classification has been designated as a non-benefited, non-classified, non-merit system, at-will position.
The City of Mesa is currently recruiting Aquatics Head Coaches for the Summer Season. The Summer Season runs from April 2023 through August 2023. Schedules vary from 25 - 38 hours per week, depending on business needs.
As an Aquatics Head Coach you will coach, mentor, and train techniques related to swim teams, artistic swimming teams, dive teams, or water polo teams; and junior lifeguard programs. You will develop the skills of athletes and volunteers, supervise participants, take corrective action as needed, recruit volunteers and assign them to work matches, meets, and events. Other duties include monitoring activities at public pools to prevent accidents, rescuing swimmers in danger of drowning, checking pool water chemistry, cash handling, and general cleaning duties. You may be scheduled for lifeguard and/or swim lesson instructor assignments.
Qualified applicants must successfully complete one skills testing. The first skills test will be offered on Saturday, March 25, 2023 and remaining staffing needs will be filled at a second skills test Saturday, April 8, 2023. Skills testing will include an assessment of various lifeguard skills, fitness level, as well as a verbal interview. In order to attend either skills test, applications must be received online by 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, March 22, 2023, and you must receive an email invitation with details of the skills testing event. Applications received after March 22nd will be considered on an as-needed basis.
Additional Information:
Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor certification classes are offered by the City of Mesa beginning in February. A skills test review is offered in March. All staff will be provided black swimsuit/shorts uniform, two lifeguard t-shirts, and a Fox 40 whistle. Visible tattoos with inappropriate lettering or images such as nudity or offensive language must be covered. Visible body piercings must be appropriate and professional.
Incentive Information:
The City of Mesa is excited to offer reimbursement to NEW staff for the cost of Lifeguard Certification classes ($200) and Water Safety Instructor Certification classes ($225) obtained through the City of Mesa. To be eligible for reimbursement, applicants must register, complete and pass the certification class, pass the skills test, and be hired as a City of Mesa staff member for the Summer 2023 Season.
Seasonal staff are also eligible for a $500 incentive at the conclusion of the season. To receive the incentive, staff must work an entire season and receive a positive supervisor evaluation.

Qualifications & Requirements

Minimum Qualifications Required. Good (3 - 9 months) experience as a lifeguard OR three months' experience as participant or coach in competitive swimming, artistic swimming, diving, or water polo.
Special Requirements. Valid Lifeguard Certification, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer Certification.
Substance Abuse Testing. Due to the safety and/or security sensitive nature of this classification, individuals shall be subject to pre-employment or pre-placement alcohol, drug and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy and procedures.
Preferred/Desirable Qualifications. Graduation from high school or GED and Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification is preferred. Some (3 - 6 months) experience as a Lifeguard is desirable.
