Curator Talk: Latin Jazz Roots and Pioneers

Explore the roots of Latin jazz and its pioneering artists since the 1940s with Daniel Piper, MIM’s curator for Latin America. Learn about the dynamic musical exchanges between the Latin Caribbean and the United States that fueled this international genre’s development.

Listen to upbeat orchestral Latin jazz tunes from Harmony Project Phoenix’s Orquesta Juvenil Latino Caribeña (Latin Caribbean Children’s Orchestra).

Join us for a dynamic performance from local Latin jazz band Andrés Martínez Trío as they masterfully mix salsa, cumbia, cha-cha, and Latin jazz into a musical blend.

Film: Buena Vista Social Club
2:00–3:45 p.m.
Watch a screening of this documentary following the formation and subsequent successes of the Buena Vista Social Club, an ensemble of legendary Cuban musicians.
