E34: Hawesaholics: The Movement Shaping Mesa’s Outdoor Soul with Shawn Stenmark
This week on the City Limitless® podcast, we close out Season 3 with dirt, desert views and pure community energy, Mesa style. We dove headfirst into one of Mesa’s most epic outdoor adventures: mountain biking at the Hawes Trail System. Joining us was Shawn Stenmark, founder of the wildly popular Hawesaholics community and director of maintenance for the Hawes Trail Alliance. If you’ve ever wondered why riders from across Arizona and beyond flock to Mesa with their bikes in tow, this episode explains why.
What started as a simple love for riding turned into something truly powerful. Shawn shared how Hawesaholics began as a grassroots Facebook group and has since grown into a thriving community of more than 7,500 members, all connected by a shared passion for the trails and for giving back. The Hawesaholics Facebook group isn’t just a place to plan rides; it’s a hub for encouragement, mentorship, gear sharing, volunteerism and building real friendships on and off the trail.
At the heart of it all is the Hawes Trail System, a world-class network of more than 65 miles of trails, located right here in Mesa, Arizona. Shawn walked us through how the trail system evolved from informal paths into a nationally recognized destination, thanks to intentional planning, strong partnerships and an incredible amount of community service. As trail use increased, so did the need for expansion. More trails meant less congestion, better rider experiences and safer access for everyone. Through collaboration with the Hawes Trail Alliance and the Forest Service, Mesa now boasts a trail system that accommodates all skill levels, from first-time riders to elite athletes.
“We built world-class trails, and the public responded. People are driving here to ride, and that’s when you know you’ve created something special.” - Shawn Stenmark
Community impact is where this story truly shines. Hawesaholics members help maintain trails, improve parking, enhance safety and lead large-scale volunteer efforts. Many group members have stepped into leadership roles within the Hawes Trail Alliance, proving that this is more than a riding group; it’s a movement built on stewardship, pride and giving back. From supporting trail development to organizing food drives, youth programs and first aid clinics, this community shows what’s possible when passion meets purpose.
We also highlighted the incredible HBRO, Hawes Babes Ride Out, community, led by the unstoppable energy of Tiana and Robin. What started as an effort to make mountain biking more welcoming for women has grown into a massive, supportive network that empowers riders of all abilities. Their presence creates space, confidence and connection on the trails while strengthening Hawesaholics' inclusive culture.
And of course, no conversation with Shawn would be complete without talking about the event everyone circles on their calendar each year, HawesFest. Happening on Jan. 31 this year, HawesFest is the ultimate celebration of bikes, community and Mesa’s outdoor lifestyle. Hosted at Boulder Park in Las Sendas, this free event is open to everyone: riders, families, spectators, kids and curious newcomers alike. Expect group rides for all skill levels, fun bike games, clinics, giveaways, great food and a laid back, grassroots vibe that perfectly captures what Hawesaholics is all about.
This episode closes Season 3 of City Limitless ® Podcast, and what a way to end it. This conversation was a reminder that Mesa’s magic isn’t just found in places, it’s found in people. In the communities that show up, build together and invite everyone along for the ride.
Huge thanks to Shawn Stenmark and the entire Hawesaholics community for sharing their story, their energy and their heart. If you’re looking for inspiration, adventure or a reason to get outside, this episode is a must listen, you won't want to miss it!
