Merkle Trail FAQ

Is the Merkle Trail truly wheelchair accessible?
Yes. The Merkle Trail is designated as barrier-free by Usery Mountain Regional Park, meaning it is designed to be navigable by wheelchair users and stroller pushers. The path is unpaved but wide and maintained with a firm surface. The trail has minimal elevation change throughout the loop.
How long does it take to hike the Merkle Trail?
Most visitors complete the 1-mile loop in 30 to 45 minutes at a relaxed pace. Allow more time if planning to stop for photos or a visit to the Nature Center before or after the hike.
Can I connect to other trails from the Merkle Trail?
Yes. At the north end of the loop, a short climb over a small peak connects to the Vista Trail, which adds distance and elevation for visitors wanting to extend their outing. The connection is signed from the main loop.
Is there a fee to hike the Merkle Trail?
Yes. A day-use vehicle entry fee is required to enter Usery Mountain Regional Park.
Are dogs allowed on the Merkle Trail?
Yes. Dogs are welcome on the Merkle Trail on a leash. Bring water for your pet and be aware of the desert surface temperature in summer months.
Is the Merkle Trail good for kids?
It's one of the best family hikes in the Mesa area for young children. The 1-mile loop, flat terrain, wide path and plant life make it an ideal introduction to the Sonoran Desert for kids of all ages.
