[Opening reflections]

Girls are applying, they’re pushing hard, they’re listening. We’ve had some good mindset talks, so the girls are getting a real holistic view of how to improve their day.

You know, the journey to greatness is lonely. It’s hard, and it’s supposed to be. I used to think every time it got hard it was because I was terrible or failing. But I learned that no, it’s just part of it.

If you can live each moment, if you can live your minutes on purpose, life unfolds beautifully. Whatever comes your way in the moment, you can handle.

Ashley: Hey y’all, welcome back to City Limitless, where we explore Mesa and beyond the city boundaries. I’m your host, Ashley, and I’m so excited today.

We have a three-time Olympic gold medalist, one of the most decorated athletes in sand beach volleyball, founder of P1440, and CEO. Please welcome Kerri Walsh Jennings and Ashley Dean Wolveranson.

You both get gold medals today.

Kerri: We’re excited to be here.

Ashley: I want to paint the picture for people. You have P1440 out here in Mesa, and now I’m working with P1440 alongside Ashley, who is an absolute badass.

Kerri: For me, the secret of my success, from little me to college me and onward, was surrounding myself with great people. The success of P1440, our partnerships with AAG, that’s all my secret sauce.

Allowing myself to be with wonderful people who let me show up, work hard, and roll the dice, it’s been awesome.

Ashley: Ashley, tell me about your journey.

Ashley Dean Wolveranson: I had a great career as a collegiate coach, then got involved in club volleyball, which rolled into facility management. I always knew I wanted to give back to the sport.

Eventually I started understanding the business side of running facilities. It’s been an incredible journey. There came a point where I thought I wanted to step away from volleyball, and then P1440 came into my life.

It was around October of 2022. P1440 had been established in 2018, and leadership was evolving it from a for-profit to a nonprofit. My brother-in-law actually saw the posting on LinkedIn.

Kerri: The pro side of our sport is lacking. We’re an Olympic sport, so once every four years for two weeks, we’re the best thing going, and then we disappear.

P1440 originally wanted to solve that by creating a sustainable tour. But it became very political, very expensive. Then COVID hit.

COVID gave us the opportunity to pivot into youth, which truly has my heart. I’m still a 10-year-old inside, wanting approval and wanting to keep achieving, but now with better tools.

As a foundation, we were able to seek funding to break down barriers to entry. People think you have to be on the coast to play beach volleyball, but that’s not true.

Through our partnership with AAG, more facilities are popping up around the country, and there’s an appetite for youth-level participation.

Ashley: I want to talk about the name P1440. Where did that come from?

Kerri: There’s a lot of intentionality in everything we do. 1440 represents the minutes in a day. It’s about living intentionally, finding the hero within.

Ashley: I love that.

Ashley: Being from Arizona, beach volleyball isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. Why Mesa? Why AAG?

Kerri: Mesa is a world-class facility. There’s no better place to be. It has everything an athlete needs in one location.

Ashley Dean Wolveranson: We do a lot of nighttime programming because of the heat. But what AAG offers is unmatched. Performance center, sand, indoor courts, it’s holistic athlete development.

Ashley: You talk about winning moments and winning in the moment. What does that mean?

Ashley Dean Wolveranson: It’s our founding principle. Living in the moment, being intentional with your 1440 minutes. Appreciating where you are and being present.

Ashley: What are you looking for when you bring your program to different facilities?

Ashley Dean Wolveranson: World-class facilities, yes, but also community partners. Churches, schools, corporate events. We want to hear what the community needs and build something together.

We’re not coming in with a fixed menu. We collaborate and create programming that serves people where they are.

Kerri: Living in the moment is the antidote to stress, guilt, and sadness. I’m a working mom. I travel a lot. But when I’m present with my kids, even for an hour, it covers the absence.

Quality over quantity. Everything comes to me in the moment.

Breathwork, embodiment, asking yourself who you want to be, what’s in your way, what you can start or stop doing today. Ownership happens one moment at a time.

Ashley: With your leadership backgrounds and being moms, what lessons are you passing on?

Ashley Dean Wolveranson: We do hard things. My five-year-old has a shirt that says that. It’s okay to be uncomfortable. That’s where growth happens.

Sometimes when things get hard, you just laugh through it, knowing you’re supported.

Kerri: The best leaders lead themselves first. That’s our job as parents. Our kids don’t listen to what we say, they watch what we do.

We talk about knowing who you are, who you want to be, what you represent. Responsibility isn’t bad. It’s empowering.

Ashley: Sports really do translate to life.

Kerri: Absolutely. Whether you’re an athlete, a musician, or in tech, the mindset carries through everything.

At P1440, we’re committed to growing the game, diversifying programming, and supporting athletes further along in their journey.

When people experience P1440, I want them to feel like they’re cared for. Relationships are at the heart of everything we do.

Our partnerships aren’t just on paper. We want to kick ass through love, intentionality, and excellence.

Mesa has impressed us deeply. The pride, the energy, the people, it’s special.

[Outro]

Ashley: I love that. Thank you both for being here and for everything you’re building. Don’t forget to like, comment, subscribe, and we’ll see you next week. Bye.
