The Best Trails to Check Out in Mesa

Top 5 Running and Walking Trails
1. Wind Cave Trail
Some of Mesa’s most popular hiking and walking trails can be found at Usery Mountain Regional Park. Wind Cave Trail in particular is a local favorite. This 3.2-mile out-and-back trail is considered generally moderate. On average, it takes about 2 hours to complete. As this trail is quite popular, you’re likely to encounter other people on your walk or run. The trail is open year-round and welcomes dogs, but they must be on a leash.
2. Bulldog Saddle and Pass Mountain Loop
Also located in Usery Mountain Regional Park is Bulldog Saddle and Pass Mountain Loop. This loop trail is 4.8 miles in length and is considered moderately challenging, taking about two and a half hours to complete. The best times to visit this trail are during the generally cooler months in Mesa, ranging from October through May. Dogs are also welcome on this trail.
3. Hawes Ridge Loop
Explore the Tonto National Forest via Hawes Ridge Loop. This 2.7-mile loop trail near Mesa is considered an easy route and takes about an hour to complete. This loop is a popular one for explorers to hike, mountain bike and run, so expect to see others on this trail. The most ideal time to visit is between December and April. Dogs are welcome and must be on a leash.
4. Saguaro Trail
Also in the Tonto National Forest, Saguaro Trail is another great out-and-back trail just 2.4 miles in length. This trail is considered moderately challenging and takes a little over an hour to complete. This area is popular for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. This trail is open all year long and is perfect to visit at any time. Dogs are welcome.
5. Brown Road Hill
If you’re looking for a bit more of an incline walk or run, check out Brown Road Hill, also known as Spook Hill. Within just 0.9 miles, there is a 288-foot elevation gain, so this trail is considered moderately challenging and takes about 30 minutes to complete. Brown Road Hill is quite popular, as it is a great spot for hikers, runners and walkers alike. To enjoy more peace and quiet, try to go during more quiet times of the day like early in the morning or in the early afternoon if the weather permits. The trail is open year-round.
