Before you head out, fuel up at What's Crackin' Cafe, a lively all-scratch brunch spot at Red Mountain Promenade (6663 E. McDowell Road, Suite 101). The menu runs from hand-floured country fried steaks to creative eggs benedicts, and the full bar brings serious brunch credibility — 12 varieties of mimosas, an award-winning Bloody Mary and 20 beers on tap. The dog-friendly patio is a bonus if you're bringing a four-legged co-pilot.

Hit the Trail

Stop 1: Superstition Mountain Lost Dutchman Museum
Head east on the Apache Trail toward Superstition Mountain Lost Dutchman Museum. Set against the dramatic volcanic backdrop of the Superstition Mountains, this museum dives deep into the region's layered history — from Apache heritage and early settler life to the enduring legend of the Lost Dutchman's gold mine. Don't miss the Elvis Presley Memorial Chapel, a beautifully preserved piece of the original Apacheland Movie Ranch featured in Presley's 1969 film, Charro! On weekends, storyteller Teton Ken brings the Lost Dutchman legend to life in person. Plan for about an hour.

Stop 2: Goldfield Ghost Town
A few miles up the road, Goldfield Ghost Town has been welcoming visitors for more than 115 years. Perched between the Superstition and Goldfield Mountains, it sprang up within a year of the first gold strike in 1892 and today lets you walk the same Main Street, explore historic buildings and tour the reconstructed Mammoth Gold Mine. Activities range from panning for gold and boarding Arizona's only narrow-gauge train to the Mystery Shack and Superstition Zipline. The daily gunfight shows by the Goldfield Gunfighters are a crowd favorite — check the schedule on arrival. Budget at least an hour, more if the kids discover the gold panning.

Afternoon: Cruise Canyon Lake on the Dolly Steamboat

All Aboard!

Continue up the Apache Trail to Canyon Lake Marina and board the Dolly Steamboat, a replica sternwheeler that has been cruising Canyon Lake's secluded inner waterways since 1983. The 90-minute narrated nature cruise is a remarkable way to experience the lake — the captain covers the history of the Apache Trail, the lore of the Lost Dutchman's gold and the geology of the canyon walls rising on both sides of the boat, while the wildlife does its own thing overhead and along the shoreline.

Keep your eyes on the cliffs for desert bighorn sheep — one of Canyon Lake's signature wildlife sightings — and scan the sky for bald eagles and red-tailed hawks. The Dolly also offers a Twilight Dinner Cruise and special Astronomy Cruises for those who want to linger after dark. For this itinerary, the afternoon nature cruise pairs well with the evening paddle ahead.

Reservations are required. Check in at the ticket booth at least 30 minutes before departure. Important to note: no outside food, beverages, alcohol, glass containers or weapons are allowed aboard the Dolly. A snack bar on board carries water, sodas, snacks and alcohol — note that the snack bar is cash or check only, no credit cards

Late Lunch: Tortilla Flat Saloon & Settlement

After your cruise, continue just two miles past Canyon Lake to one of Arizona's most singular dining experiences: Tortilla Flat Saloon and Settlement. Established in 1904 as an Old West stagecoach stop, Tortilla Flat today has just six full-time residents and an atmosphere that no amount of renovation could replicate. Pull up a saddle at the bar — literally — and take in walls plastered floor to ceiling with currency and business cards left by visitors from around the world.

The food leans hearty and western. The killer chili is the headliner, the prickly pear ice cream is the closer, and the prickly pear lemonade is worth an order regardless of the temperature.

Evening: Paddleboard and Kayak With Yak N SUP

Kayaking Adventure with Yak N SUP

Back at Canyon Lake Marina, it's time to get on the water. Yak N SUP Canyon Lake is stationed right at the marina and offers single and tandem kayaks, paddleboards and a one-of-a-kind six-person party paddleboard.

For a self-guided sunset paddle, rent a kayak or SUP and head into the canyon as the light drops. The canyon walls shift color dramatically in the late afternoon, and the no-wake zones on parts of the lake make for quiet, peaceful paddling away from motorized boat traffic.

Guided Tour Options:

• Light Up the Night Glow Paddle (seasonal) — LED-equipped gear turns the dark water into something otherworldly. Full-moon glow floats are among their most popular offerings.
• Paranormal Paddle Tour (seasonal) — A 2.5-hour guided evening tour deep into Boulder Canyon, led by local storyteller Steven Campbell. Guides share bone-chilling tales of ghost sightings, unexplained lights and the legends of those who vanished searching for the Lost Dutchman's gold.
• Sunrise and Sunrise Paddles — For those wanting a quieter, more meditative experience on the water before the canyon warms up.

A Tonto National Forest Recreation Pass (Tonto Pass) is required for day-use access at Canyon Lake. Day passes are available at participating vendors near the lake and at convenience stores throughout the Mesa area.
