E43: Where Big Ideas Begin - Inside the idea Museum with Melissa Martinez
This week on City Limitless®, we sit down with Melissa Martinez, curator at the idea Museum, to explore how creativity, community and hands-on experiences are shaping the next generation right here in downtown Mesa. From interactive exhibits to supporting local artists, this conversation highlights how art can inspire, connect and transform the way we see the world.
"It's a gem for everybody in Mesa and the surrounding areas... the arts are something that's lacking in the schools, and so we're able to kind of offer that extension for families." - Melissa Martinez
Melissa’s journey into the arts started early, growing up in the suburbs of Chicago surrounded by architecture, creativity and a strong appreciation for artistic expression. With access to a wide range of art programs in school, she quickly discovered her passion for sculpture, eventually leading her to Arizona State University where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture. Today, that background continues to influence her work, especially in the way she designs and fabricates immersive exhibits for museum visitors.
At the idea Museum, Melissa has found the perfect blend of her passions, combining art, education and working with children. With more than 20 years of experience in museums, along with time spent as an elementary school art teacher, she brings a unique perspective to creating spaces where kids can learn through play. Every exhibit is designed to be interactive, allowing children to explore, create and engage with art in a way that feels both fun and meaningful.
Inspiration for these exhibits comes from everywhere. Melissa shares that her favorite pastime is visiting other museums, gardens and galleries, seeking moments of inspiration to bring back to Mesa. Whether it’s a local Arizona artist or a traveling exhibition, the goal is always the same: to create experiences that resonate with families and encourage creativity in everyday life.
One of the newest exhibits doing just that is Rube Goldberg: The World of Hilarious Invention. This playful, hands-on experience introduces visitors to the whimsical and complex chain reactions made famous by the iconic artist and engineer. Designed to engage visitors of all ages, the exhibit invites kids and adults alike to experiment, problem-solve and discover how simple actions can lead to unexpected outcomes. It’s not just about watching the exhibits work, but about inspiring curiosity that continues long after visitors leave the museum.
BBeyond the exhibits themselves, the idea Museum plays an important role in supporting the local arts community. By showcasing, commissioning and purchasing work from Arizona artists, the museum helps create opportunities for creatives to grow and share their work. It’s a commitment that not only strengthens the arts scene but also ensures that visitors experience authentic, locally inspired creativity.
Looking ahead, the idea Museum is evolving, building on the success of the newly opened idea Lab. Future plans include updated spaces, outdoor play areas, and more interactive experiences that reflect creativity both inside and out. At its core, the museum is about more than just art; it’s about giving families a place to connect, explore and be inspired together.
