Fishing Saguaro Lake: Three Access Points to Know
Saguaro Lake sits just northeast of Mesa in the Tonto National Forest, with deep water, rocky points, and long stretches that fish better when you can move. It’s broad enough to explore by boat or kayak, and consistent enough that a short evening session can still pay off.
What You Can Catch
Largemouth bass and yellow bass are reliable targets, especially around points, brush, and breaks.
Channel catfish and flathead catfish give the lake its after-dark reputation, with bites that often improve when the shoreline quiets down.
Bluegill keep things steady in calmer pockets and along protected edges.
Butcher Jones Day Use Area
This is one of the most popular shore and paddle-access areas on Saguaro Lake, with a gently sloping beach and a short trail that opens up coves you can reach on foot.
Local tip: The coves along the Butcher Jones shoreline and trail are reliable for bass and panfish when the main-lake water is choppy. If you’re fishing from shore, keep your casts tight to the rock and work parallel when you can.
Good to know: Motorized boats are not permitted in the Butcher Jones swimming area. If you’re bringing a motorized boat, plan on launching at Saguaro del Norte or the marina.
Saguaro Del Norte Day Use Area
Saguaro del Norte is the practical launch-and-go option, with motorized and non-motorized boat access plus picnic space when you want to make a full day of it.
Local tip: Run your first milk-run on nearby rocky points, then idle into coves to fish submerged brush once the sun is up. Yellow bass often show themselves when you stay on one depth and work it thoroughly.
Saguaro Lake Marina
When you want services close by, the marina is the hub. It’s a helpful starting point for boaters, and it keeps your day simple if you need fuel, supplies, or a quick reset before a sunset bite.
Local tip: Treat the marina as a launch pad, not your only water. The best fishing usually starts once you’re on a point or tucked into structure away from the busiest lanes.
Before You Go: Canyon Lake Fishing Checklist
Get legal: Arizona fishing license and current regulations
Arizona Game and Fish covers licenses and regulations online. Anyone age 10 or older needs a valid Arizona fishing license.
Parking and passes
Saguaro Lake is in the Tonto National Forest, and some sites require a pass or fee for day-use parking. Check posted signage at the access point you’re using.
Boating note
The Forest Service notes that boating at Saguaro Lake may require a Tonto Daily Pass and Watercraft Sticker or a Tonto Discovery Pass, and that some fees can be separate by site.
Bring water and sun protection
Desert lake days add up fast, even when you’re on the water. Build in shade when you can, and plan your fishing around the cooler edges of the day.
