Arizonans celebrate a love affair with the horse here in the Southwest and there are numerous places visitors can take a trail ride through our stunning Sonoran Desert. At Goldfield Livery & Stables, they cater to riders from novice to experienced, singles to large groups and many families.

At Saguaro Lake Ranch Stable, located at historic Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch in Mesa, guided horseback rides take visitors into this rugged corner of the Sonoran Desert. Trails lead through the Goldfield Mountain landscape with views of the cliffs, desert vegetation and the Salt River, giving riders a slower, close-up look at the terrain surrounding Mesa

The stable’s guided walking rides are designed for a range of experience levels, so first-time riders can settle into the saddle while more experienced riders can simply take in the scenery. Wranglers match guests with horses before heading out on trails selected according to current conditions and safety.

The standard group ride lasts about 1 hour and 15 minutes, and sunset rides add warm evening light over the Goldfield Mountains. Depending on seasonal conditions and water levels, some routes may include a Salt River crossing, though crossings aren’t guaranteed. Riders must be at least 7 years old, and reservations are recommended.

The setting also makes it easy to turn a trail ride into a longer desert escape. Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch has 20 historic cabins near the stable and Lower Salt River, putting mornings on horseback, time by the water and quiet desert evenings within a few steps of one another.

For another way to get in the saddle, head north to Fort McDowell Adventures on the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation. Guided trail rides cross private Sonoran Desert terrain near the Verde River, giving visitors another perspective on the landscape just outside Mesa.

Visitors can choose a traditional trail ride or lean further into ranch life with experiences such as cattle drives and wagon rides. Fort McDowell Adventures has been offering horseback experiences for more than 30 years and operates seasonally, so checking current availability before visiting is important.
