There are plenty of ways to keep you cool and comfortable while still enjoying unforgettable experiences- it just takes a little planning.

EPIC WATER ADVENTURES

Mesa's nearby lakes and rivers become your ultimate oasis in summer.

TUBE THE SALT RIVER

It isn’t Arizona in the summer without a float down The Salt River. You may choose to rent with Salt River Tubing, or go on your own with a group. Either way, you’ll embark on a leisurely float down the cool, winding Salt River through the Tonto National Forest. The stunning desert scenery makes for an incredibly relaxing and picturesque journey. You may even see the famous Salt River Wild Horses.

Summer Safety Tip:

Always go with a group. Go early! Stay hydrated by bringing plenty of water (no glass containers on the river!). Wear appropriate footwear, a hat, and sunscreen. Check Salt River Tubing for current hours, safety guidelines, and shuttle information before you go. Alcohol is prohibited, and remember to respect the river and leave no trace!

KAYAKING & PADDLEBOARDING

For a more active water adventure, rent a kayak or paddleboard on nearby lakes like Saguaro Lake or Canyon Lake. For the summer, I highly suggest being on the water around sunrise or sunset.

Go during cooler parts of the day (early morning or late afternoon). Wear a life vest, even if you're a strong swimmer. Hydrate continuously. Be aware of boat traffic, especially on weekends.

EARLY MORNING HIKES

Arizona in the summer is surprisingly vibrant in the early hours. Hit trails in areas like the Usery Mountain Regional Park or Hawes Trail System just after sunrise to experience cooler temperatures and stunning views. Many desert animals are most active during these times.

Summer Safety Tip:

Start your hike at or before sunrise. Carry at least a gallon of water per person for even short hikes. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and lightweight, light-colored clothing. Tell someone where you're going and when you expect to return. Stick to marked trails and be aware of your surroundings (snakes, scorpions are more active in warmer months).

STARGAZING ADVENTURES

Once the sun goes down and temperatures drop, Mesa's clear night skies are perfect for stargazing.
