E41: What Is Padel and Why Is It Taking Over Mesa?
This week on City Limitless®, we sit down with J, the founder of Mesa Padel Club, to explore how one of the world's fastest-growing sports has found a home right in the heart of downtown Mesa. With four courts, a welcoming pro shop and a vision built around community, Mesa Padel Club is bringing something entirely new to the valley.
"I won't blame you for saying padel or paddle. But this sport deserves its respect. It's the fastest growing sport in the world, and we try to make it as low barrier as possible. If you want to play, we want to provide a space for you." - Jeroen Meefout
J's journey to Mesa is anything but ordinary. Originally from the Netherlands, he came to the U.S. to play collegiate soccer, earned his degree and eventually met his wife in San Diego. It was during a trip back to the Netherlands in 2024 that everything shifted. After playing padel and witnessing firsthand how deeply embedded the sport was in everyday life there, he saw both a passion and an opportunity. "Every little town there has a facility or a club," J shares. "I saw that opportunity and I wanted to start something." That vision led him to downtown Mesa, where he packed up his family and got to work.
For those unfamiliar, padel is not paddleball, and the distinction matters. The sport J describes combines the social ease of pickleball with the structure of tennis, all played on a glass-walled court where the walls are part of the game. The scoring mirrors tennis, as the rallies run long and the calorie burn is real. J laughs recalling his first game on a warm Dutch summer day: "In 90 minutes, I burned 1,200 calories!" It’s competitive, dynamic and easy enough for beginners to pick up without feeling overwhelmed.
Getting to opening day was not without its challenges. Permitting delays pushed back the timeline more than once, but J never wavered. What kept him going was simple: a genuine belief in the sport and the space he was building. Following his wife's advice, he documented the entire journey on Instagram, giving followers a behind-the-scenes look at what it truly takes to launch something from scratch. That transparency resonated, building a community before the courts ever opened.
The facility itself reflects the intentionality behind the brand. Built on what was once an empty lot on Main Street, Mesa Padel Club features four courts side by side with a pro shop anchoring the center. Everything a first-time player needs is already there, from racket rentals to balls to a knowledgeable team ready to help. "All you need to bring is a good attitude and a sporty outfit," J says, "and then you're ready to go."
Beyond the courts, Mesa Padel Club is woven into the fabric of downtown. Athletes from Benedictine University are already regulars. Neighboring businesses like Proof Bread, Worth Takeaway and Tacos Chiwas are part of the full experience as players can grab lunch after a match, walk to a coffee shop or simply soak in the energy that downtown Mesa has built over the last several years.
