E50: Where the West Welcomes You - Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch featuring Sierra Brewer
This week on the City Limitless® podcast, we trade the everyday rush for river views, horseback rides and Western hospitality. Sierra Brewer, operations manager at Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch, joins us along the Salt River to share what makes the ranch so memorable. Beneath the towering Bulldog Cliffs, there's plenty to explore and room to unwind, whether you’re settling into a cabin or gathering around the dinner table.
“You’re out of the city, you’re surrounded by the bird chirpings. And it’s just a beautiful morning waking up, looking out of your porch and seeing the mountains.” - Sierra Brewer
For Sierra, finding the ranch began with curiosity. An Arizona native raised on the west side of the Valley, she discovered its Instagram account and saw horses crossing the river. She wanted to know where this place was. When her future husband joined the team, a front desk opening gave her the chance to join him. Today, she helps shape the experiences that first caught her attention.
The ranch’s story stretches back to 1928, when it housed workers constructing the nearby dam. In 1948, the current owner’s grandmother purchased the property, beginning a family legacy spanning three generations. That history lives in photographs, familiar gathering spaces and the stories shared with guests. It's easy to see why families have been coming back for decades.
Mornings begin with birdsong, mountain views from the porch, and a homemade breakfast. From there, you can head out on horseback, paddle in a kayak or relax beside the pool. Inside the lodge, puzzles, books and games invite families to spend time together. A four-sided fireplace warms cooler evenings, creating another reason to slow down and linger.
Outside, the landscape offers its own invitation. They offer horseback riding on their private trail system, with sunset bringing golden light to the cliffs. When river flows decrease, rides can include a river crossing, like the one that first caught Sierra's eye on Instagram. Kayaking offers another way to explore the Salt River and spot wildlife along the way. (Available activities vary with the season and river conditions.)
At the Cowboy Cookouts, even the dinner bell carries a story. Originally used at a nearby one-room schoolhouse, it now signals a meal of ribeye, smoked chicken, baked potatoes and cowboy beans. Guests can help ring it before settling in with live music and good company. For those staying overnight, family-style dinners offer another kind of connection—the change to get to know one another. As Sierra puts it, “people become friends.”
For some guests, a stay at the ranch becomes a family tradition. Sierra recalls a family eager to return each Thanksgiving and another that has gathered at the ranch after Christmas for more than 30 years. Children explore, spot critters and complete scavenger hunts, while weddings bring new milestones to this historic setting. Behind it all is a team that takes time to get to know its guests.
