Why Mesa is My Favorite Place to Go Thrifting in Arizona
Saturday mornings usually start the same way for me: coffee in hand, comfortable shoes and an empty trunk that I hope won't stay empty for long.
I love thrifting.
It's not just about finding something unique or saving a little money. It's the thrill of never knowing what you'll discover next. Every store has its own personality, every shelf tells a different story, and every visit feels a little like a treasure hunt.
In fact, long before I called the Valley home, I planned trips here from the Midwest that included full days of thrifting.
The vintage scene felt completely different from what I was used to. Whether it was mid-century furniture, desert-inspired décor, vintage Western wear or unique collectibles, I always came across pieces I simply couldn't find back home.
More than once, I found so many treasures that I’d have to stop at thrift stores on the way to the airport just to buy secondhand suitcases to get everything home.
Luckily, I don't have to travel very far now for a great thrift adventure. Mesa has become my favorite place to spend a day exploring vintage shops, antique stores and neighborhood thrift stores, each with its own personality and collection of unexpected finds.
Start the hunt at Call It New / Call It Antique
Just off Broadway Rd., Call It New / Call It Antique is one of those places where it's impossible to rush.
The shop blends antiques, vintage décor and collectibles into a space that feels thoughtfully curated. Every shelf invites you to slow down, look a little closer and appreciate the stories behind the pieces.
Keep the search going at Mesa Thrift Store
One of my favorite ways to kick off a thrift day is at Mesa Thrift Store.
The inventory changes constantly, which means every visit feels completely different from the last. Whether I'm browsing for home décor, funky jewelry pieces, books, kitchenware or clothing, I never know what's waiting around the next corner.
Those surprise finds are exactly what keep me coming back.
Slow down in Downtown Mesa
One of my favorite parts of a Mesa thrift day is spending time in Downtown Mesa.
After a morning of treasure hunting, it's the perfect excuse to grab a coffee, enjoy lunch at one of the local restaurants and wander through the downtown before diving back into the next round of discoveries. The walkable streets, public art and locally owned businesses make it feel like part of the adventure, not just a stop between stores.
History By George
History by George feels less like walking into a store and more like stepping into someone's lifelong collection of stories.
The antiques are fascinating, but one of the highlights is George himself. If he's in the shop, don't be surprised if you find yourself chatting about the history behind a piece, how a collection came together or one of the countless stories he's accumulated over the years.
I always leave feeling like I've discovered something new, whether it's an antique that comes home with me or a story that stays with me.
Meat Market Vintage Goods
If vintage fashion is your thing, make sure Meat Market Vintage Goods is on your list.
While you'll find a few records, collectibles and nostalgic pieces throughout the shop, the heart of Meat Market is its carefully curated selection of vintage clothing and accessories.
During one visit, I had the chance to chat with Rainier, who shared the vision behind the shop and what makes it so unique. Owned by three friends with a passion for vintage apparel and timeless style, the shop has a distinct personality that's reflected in every rack. Rather than filling the space with as much inventory as possible, every piece is intentionally selected, creating a collection that feels curated instead of crowded.
One detail I especially loved is how the store is organized by era. One side features styles from the 1980s and beyond, while the other is dedicated to pieces that predate the '80s. Whether you're searching for a perfectly worn vintage tee, a classic denim jacket or a one-of-a-kind accessory, it's a fun way to explore different decades of fashion.
Even if you don't leave with a purchase, it's worth stopping in to appreciate the craftsmanship, nostalgia and stories woven into every piece.
Assorted Garments
Just a short walk away, Assorted Garments is another stop that's well worth your time if you appreciate vintage fashion.
Specializing in thoughtfully curated clothing from the 1970s through the early 2000s, the shop feels fresh, approachable and effortlessly cool. Because it operates on a buy, sell and trade model, the inventory is constantly evolving, making every visit a little different from the last.
Whether you're searching for a vintage sweatshirt, a retro jersey, a classic pair of jeans or a graphic tee with a story to tell, it's the kind of place where you'll inevitably find yourself saying, "I'll just check one more rack."
Together, Meat Market and Assorted Garments are solidifying Downtown Mesa as one of my favorite places in Arizona to shop for vintage apparel.
Atomic Age Modern
For anyone who appreciates vintage games, retro treasures and a little nostalgia, Atomic Age Modern is a destination all its own.
The showroom’s main attraction is its collection of vintage pinball machines, all available to play, alongside an eclectic mix of records and one-of-a-kind trinkets for sale.
Even if you’re simply stopping by for a quick game, it’s worth spending time exploring.
Don't overlook Mesa's neighborhood thrift stores
While I love exploring Mesa's vintage boutiques and antique shops, some of my favorite finds have come from the neighborhood thrift stores scattered throughout the city.
One stop that's earned a regular place on my list is the Arizona Humane Society Thrift Store on Southern Avenue. I love knowing that every purchase supports a great cause, and the constantly changing inventory means there's always the chance of uncovering a hidden gem.
I also make it a point to browse the shelves at 360 Thrift whenever I'm nearby. Every visit is different, and that's part of the excitement. And no matter how much their inventory is constantly changing, it has to be one of the most organized thrift stores in the Valley and the staff are always so friendly and helpful. One trip might uncover the perfect picture frame, while the next leads to a vintage jacket or a stack of books I've been wanting to read.
Goodwill and Deseret Industries are also worth adding to your thrift rotation, especially if you enjoy the thrill of the hunt and never knowing what you'll discover next.
No matter where you choose to browse, every store has its own personality, every visit offers something different and you never know when you'll stumble across your next favorite find.
