E15: Zuill Bailey - A Musical Luminary

In this episode, award-winning cellist Zuill Bailey shares his musical journey from early childhood to where he is now. As the Guest Artistic Director for Mesa Arts Center, Bailey is curating a dynamic year of programming with innovative performances that reflect his commitment to artistic excellence and community engagement.

Zuill Bailey

Zuill Bailey, a renowned professional cellist, comes from a family deeply rooted in music. His journey with the cello began at the young age of four, and he credits music with teaching him invaluable life lessons, particularly the art of problem-solving. His passion for music shaped the course of his life, as he pursued a career doing what he loved most.

Bailey developed a unique connection with the cello, finding something deeply special in the instrument. He feels as though the cello allows him to physically embrace it, making the experience more intimate and personal. This passion, found at such a young age, drove him to study at The Juilliard School, where he laid the foundation for a remarkable career in music.

Since his transformative time at Juilliard, Bailey has seized every opportunity to connect with others through his craft. He began touring across the country, building a career filled with extraordinary moments. His accomplishments include contributing to the soundtrack of HBO’s Oz, performing in the early days of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series, and serving as the artistic director in both El Paso and now as the Guest Artistic Director at Mesa Art Center.
